Innovation Focus Areas
Kempenhaeghe will focus on innovation in the coming years. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, neuroimaging, and neuroscience offer opportunities for innovation in areas such as medication and prognosis. Additionally, we see potential for developing virtual learning environments and learning analytics that can be applied in education. Social scientific research is also important for social innovation.
We achieve this by having each center within Kempenhaeghe engage in research and innovation. The centers also collaborate and make their work visible beyond Kempenhaeghe. This is done by connecting with the business sector, healthcare and educational institutions, and research organizations.
Focus Areas in Science
As a center of expertise, Kempenhaeghe places great value on developing new knowledge through scientific research. We collaborate nationally and internationally with universities, other academic centers, research institutes, and the business sector. For example, we work with the e/MTIC MedTech Innovation Center at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and participate in the CICLe collaboration, which includes CZE, TU/e, MMC, and Kempenhaeghe. We are involved in various research consortia in the Netherlands and Europe.
Several specialists affiliated with Kempenhaeghe hold university chairs. We also collaborate with Epilepsie NL and Sein, and together with Maastricht UMC+, we form the Academic Center for Epileptology (ACE). More information can be found at: research and innovation networks.
The knowledge derived from our scientific research enhances the quality of life for individuals with epilepsy, sleep disorders, neurological learning disorders, and other brain-related conditions within the various expertise centers at Kempenhaeghe.

Research and Innovation Networks
We collaborate nationally and internationally with universities, other academic centers, research institutes, and the business sector.
Together with Maastricht UMC+, Kempenhaeghe forms the Academic Center for Epileptology (ACE). In the field of epilepsy, there is a partnership with Eindhoven University of Technology. Additionally, ACE collaborates on various topics with multiple university centers and with the epilepsy center SEIN. The Center for Neurological Learning and Developmental Disorders and the Epilepsy Residential Care Center also develop and anchor expertise with these partners. The latter also collaborates with Leiden UMC and Erasmus MC.
Kempenhaeghe also works with EpilepsieNL, a community of 200,000 Dutch individuals with epilepsy. The organization aims to improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy by funding research, sharing relevant knowledge, providing valuable information, and establishing personal relationships. EpilepsieNL works closely with Kempenhaeghe. For more information or to help, visit www.epilepsie.nl.
The Center for Sleep Medicine collaborates closely with Eindhoven University of Technology, notably formalized in the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC). e/MTIC is a successful collaboration between five parties: Philips, TU/e, CZE, MMC, and Kempenhaeghe, focused on 'fast track to clinical innovation.' e/MTIC has been operational since 2018.
We also collaborate at a scientific level with institutions such as Radboudumc, SEIN, LUMC, and various top clinical hospitals in the region. Additionally, there is a new collaboration called CICLe, involving CZE, TU/e, MMC, and Kempenhaeghe. CICLe focuses on 'fast track to implementation' with vendor independence. The focus is on demand-driven initiatives that lead to actual implementation in healthcare, with an emphasis on accessible and affordable healthcare in the Brainport region.
