Research Epilepsy Residential Care Center
This research, led by Alexandra Haenen, Orthopedagogue & GZ Psychologist, focuses on residents of the Epilepsy Residential Care Center: the importance of self-determination for people with intellectual disabilities through a strong connection with their (close) environment.
Epilepsy can lead to a sense of loss of control and vulnerability. Additionally, parents, with all the good intentions to prevent risks, may take on an overly protective role. This can undermine self-determination. The challenge for family members and caregivers is to connect with the person's need for autonomy, competence, and connectedness. This can be achieved by letting go of personal assumptions, focusing on the perspective of the family member or client, and waiting to see if the person themselves comes up with ideas.
