Pharmaceutical Research: GMG
The Pharmaceutical Research Group (GMG) involves contract research related to new anti-seizure medications. This allows the center of expertise to gain early experience with these new drugs. Additionally, Kempenhaeghe holds a wealth of information regarding drug effectiveness and toxicity. This information is relatively quickly available and provides opportunities for science students to gain research experience.
An example of recent contract research is a study on a small molecule, selective KCNQ2/3 (KV7.2/7.3) potassium channel opener. The new treatment method is administered as a once-daily oral tablet and does not require titration. It is a promising adjunctive treatment for individuals diagnosed with focal or generalized epilepsy where standard treatments have proven insufficiently effective.
