Poor sleep, or insomnia, can have many different causes. It can manifest as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking up too early, or a combination of these issues.

Insomnia can occur on its own but may also result from physical or psychological conditions, certain medications, or other sleep disorders with a physical basis.

Most patients at the Center for Sleep Medicine at Kempenhaeghe experience complex sleep problems. In some cases, multiple factors or conditions contribute to insomnia. In others, diagnosis and treatment require more intensive or specialized care than a general hospital can provide.

At the Center for Sleep Medicine, we first investigate whether insomnia can be explained by physical or other factors. If so, addressing these factors is the first step. When no underlying physical or medical causes are present, insomnia becomes a standalone problem. Worries, habits, and negative emotions related to sleep can perpetuate poor sleep. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) can be an effective treatment.

In some cases, no single cause can be identified for chronic insomnia, and a combination of reinforcing factors may play a role.

In recent years, the demand for help with primary chronic insomnia at the Center for Sleep Medicine has increased significantly, leading to a temporary suspension of new intakes. To prevent such situations in the future, we are focusing on training general practitioners and practice support staff and strengthening collaboration with them.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

The cause and/or persistence of chronic insomnia can stem from (incorrect) thoughts about sleep, negative emotions related to sleep, and lifestyle or sleep behaviors. By making adjustments to these thoughts (cognitions) and behaviors, patients can regain control over their sleep. This helps break the vicious cycle of chronic insomnia. The patient's own commitment and motivation play a crucial role in this process.

CBT-I is usually provided in group sessions, though it may also be offered individually. This therapy has been extensively researched and is considered the European gold standard for the treatment of chronic insomnia.

Efforts to Improve Insomnia Care

Insomnia has a significant negative impact on quality of life and mental well-being. Untreated insomnia increases the risk of developing psychological disorders, such as anxiety or mood disorders. CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the evidence-based first-choice treatment for chronic insomnia. This treatment has been proven effective in 70–80% of long-term insomnia patients.

Leerslapen provides healthcare professionals with tools to treat patients with chronic insomnia. The Leerslapen platform offers:
