Epilepsy Surgery Check
The Epilepsy Surgery Check is designed for capable adult patients with difficult-to-treat epilepsy who remain seizure-free after trying at least two anti-epileptic drugs. In this check, patients are seen by specialists at the Academic Center for Epileptology Kempenhaeghe. The check quickly assesses whether epilepsy surgery could be an option for the patient. The results of the check will be discussed with you and shared with your treating neurologist for further consultation.

In cases of difficult-to-treat epilepsy, where at least two anti-epileptic drugs are not effective, epilepsy surgery may provide a solution. Successful epilepsy surgery can significantly improve the quality of life. With the Epilepsy Surgery Check, both you and your treating neurologist will know within four weeks whether this procedure could be a viable option for you.

The Epilepsy Surgery Check
The Epilepsy Surgery Check takes place after a referral from your own neurologist. You will receive an intake with an epilepsy-specialized neurologist at the Academic Center for Epileptology Kempenhaeghe, followed by an MRI scan and a 24-hour EEG. The results of your MRI will be compared with a database of MRI results at Kempenhaeghe, which we call post-processing. Within four weeks, a results discussion will take place at Kempenhaeghe. The center will then share the results with your own neurologist. You and your neurologist will discuss whether an epilepsy surgery pathway could be an option for you.

Referral
Your treating neurologist can refer you to the Epilepsy Surgery Check at the Academic Center for Epileptology. The check takes place at the center's location in Heeze. You will remain under treatment at your own hospital and will discuss the results of the Epilepsy Surgery Check with both the neurologist at Kempenhaeghe and your own neurologist.
