Synoniemen:

ESES, Continuous waves and spikes during sleep

Children with CSWS experience continuous epileptic activity in their brains during deep sleep at night. These seizures are referred to as ESES (Epilepsy with Electrical Status Epilepticus during Sleep). Some children also experience seizures during the day. Often, the epileptic seizures are not easily recognized. As a result of the CSWS syndrome, children commonly develop learning and behavioral problems.

Treating the seizures can reduce these problems, which is why it is important to make the correct diagnosis in a timely manner. Symptoms typically begin when the child is between 5 and 7 years old. CSWS syndrome usually disappears after puberty, but early treatment can prevent lasting developmental delays and behavioral problems. At a specialized epilepsy center like Kempenhaeghe, there is unique expertise and experience in helping children with (suspected) CSWS syndrome.
