Clinical genetics is the medical specialty that focuses on research into hereditary diseases and congenital abnormalities. If your treating physician deems it necessary to conduct additional clinical genetic testing, you will be referred to the "genetic consultation" that takes place at the outpatient clinic of Kempenhaeghe.
During this consultation, you (or your child or family member) will be seen by a clinical genetics consultant. The treating (pediatric) neurologist and/or clinical geneticist will also be present. Based on current symptoms, medical history, family member data, and testing, an underlying cause for the condition will be sought. If applicable, DNA testing will be initiated.
If the cause of the condition can be identified, this helps your treating physician decide on a treatment approach. Additionally, as much information as possible will be provided about the symptoms, course of the disease, and potential implications for (future) children and other family members.
