Phase 1: Preliminary examinations at Kempenhaeghe
In most patients with epilepsy, there is a current MRI scan and EEG available. If this is not the case, you will receive an MRI scan as an outpatient at Kempenhaeghe in Heeze. In addition to these tests, further specialized examinations will follow to determine the exact location of the epileptic focus.
Seizure Monitoring
To determine the location of the epileptic focus, we aim to map the seizure pattern as accurately as possible. During an admission, your seizures will be monitored. You will stay for a few days to a maximum of one week in the Admission Center at Kempenhaeghe in Heeze. The seizure monitoring consists of continuous EEG monitoring and video monitoring. The EEG recordings and video footage will hopefully allow doctors to identify which area of the brain is causing the seizures. The video recording captures your seizures, and it may be necessary to provoke seizures for clearer identification.
Neuropsychological Examination
At Kempenhaeghe, a neuropsychological assessment will also take place. This usually lasts one day and involves tests in the areas of language, memory, and attention.
Support During the Process
You can also discuss with the neuropsychologist whether you would like psychological support during the process. This may include assistance with functioning after surgery and coping with the preparatory tests and the surgery itself. You must be motivated and mentally and physically able to continue with the process.
