Phase 4: The brain surgery
If the Epilepsy Surgery Working Group concludes that epilepsy surgery is possible, you will usually go to Maastricht UMC+ for the surgery. For children, this may sometimes be the UMC Utrecht.
The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. If the epilepsy focus is located near important brain functions, it is necessary for you to remain awake during the surgery to perform certain tests. In that case, you will receive local anesthesia. This type of surgery is called the Penfield procedure. The surgery itself lasts a few hours. After seven to fourteen days, you may go home.
