Academic Center for Epileptology: all specialized knowledge and care in one place

Around a quarter of epilepsy patients in the Netherlands have a condition that is so complex that (additional) research and/or treatment in a specialized epilepsy center is required: the Academic Center for Epileptology Kempenhaeghe/Maastricht UMC+.

In the case of a complex form of epilepsy, the expertise of multiple specialists is often needed to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the best treatment. As a center of expertise, we have these specialists on hand, along with specific research methods. Our neurologists and other experts are familiar with advanced treatment options, which sometimes can only be implemented by involving specialized epilepsy care. Additionally, the epilepsy specialists have extra knowledge and experience in supporting both children and adults with epilepsy.

Which patients can you refer?

Your patients can be referred to us if there is uncertainty about the cause of the seizures or if the seizures cannot be controlled. Or if a specialized approach is needed due to the combination of epilepsy with other issues. For example, a developmental disorder, intellectual disability, learning, behavioral, or work-related problems. We can also conduct research into the potential of certain treatment methods or provide a second opinion.

Our goal

Our specialists do everything possible for an improved diagnosis, different medication, the latest and most suitable treatment methods, and support for your patient. Our goal? To help the patient lead a normal life despite epilepsy.
