Referring to the Academic Center for Epileptology

If your patient is dealing with - possibly - a complex form of epilepsy, the Academic Center for Epileptology can offer added value for both you and your patient. Within our center, experts from Kempenhaeghe and the Neurology department of Maastricht UMC+ work closely together.

We offer highly specialized diagnosis, treatment, and support to children and adults with epileptic disorders and/or psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). We assess your patient from a medical-epileptological, psychological, and social perspective.

Who refers?

As a referrer, you are an important partner with whom we are happy to collaborate and share our findings. Typically, a medical specialist refers a patient to Kempenhaeghe. In certain cases, general practitioners can also refer patients.

Referral letter

A referral letter from the general practitioner or medical specialist is required for a referral to Kempenhaeghe. A referral letter is also needed if a patient has been under treatment (or had treatment) but has not had a consultation for more than two years.

Information about the results

After receiving the referral letter, your patient will be sent an invitation for an initial consultation as soon as possible. After the diagnostic investigation, we will inform you about the results and any potential next steps. For most patients, after the intervention at Kempenhaeghe, you will take over the care again. If you refer a patient for the Epilepsy Surgery Check, you will remain the primary care provider during this short-term analysis.

Collegial consultation?

Would you like to first consult with a neurologist from the Academic Center for Epileptology regarding a referral? This is also possible. You can contact us via phone numbers (040) 227 90 22 (Kempenhaeghe Heeze) or (076) 209 3700 (Kempenhaeghe, Breda location). Ask for the secretariat of the epilepsy outpatient clinic.

Outside office hours or in case of emergency, please ask for the on-call medical specialist via phone number (040) 227 90 22 (Kempenhaeghe Heeze).
