Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is the English term for a condition that literally translates to "restless legs."
Patients with RLS experience an unpleasant itching, tingling, or restless sensation in their legs. The symptoms mainly occur at rest and are worse in the evening and at night. This creates an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. Some people with RLS also experience brief, jerking movements of the legs during sleep.
The Center for Sleep Medicine at Kempenhaeghe has extensive experience in treating RLS. Particularly when one or two medications have already been tried but are not effective, a referral can be helpful. This is also the case if the symptoms occur earlier in the day or extend to the arms or other parts of the body.
