Synoniemen:

West syndrome, Infantile spasms

West syndrome is a severe epilepsy syndrome characterized by a specific type of seizure (Salaam seizures) and typical abnormalities on the EEG, which lead to a halt in the child's development if not treated. The sooner the seizures are controlled, the better it is for the child's development.

The degree of developmental delay in West syndrome varies from child to child. West syndrome can progress to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The cause is usually brain damage, a genetic mutation, or a disorder in the development of the brain.

At a specialized epilepsy center such as Kempenhaeghe, there is unique expertise and experience in helping children with (suspected) West syndrome.
