Epilepsy, Sleep and Neurocognition
The 14th edition of the annual international clinical symposium ‘Epilepsy, sleep and neurocognition update@Kempenhaeghe.nl‘ has taken place on Friday 23 March 2012 in Heeze, The Netherlands. Over the past thirteen years, this symposium has become a major international scientific event in the Low Countries, hosting over 600 delegates in 2011.
This year the central themes were:
- symptomatic epilepsy
- the many faces of disordered sleep
- new insights in neurocognition
During state-of-the-art mail sessions, workshops and parallel sessions, recent progress in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, sleep disorders and cognitive dysfunctions were discussed. A specific session focused on new insights in neurological learning sisabilities.
A distinguished national and international faculty guaranteed a high quality of presentations and content covering best clinical practice, results of the latest scientific research and illustrative cases.
The main sponsor of the symposium was UCB Pharma.The parallel sessions of the sleep update were sponsored by the BASS and NSWO.
Symposium 2013
The next annual international clinical symposium Update@Kempenhaeghe.nl takes place on Thursday 21 March and Friday 22 March 2013. More information to follow.
Accreditation
Accreditation from the Dutch and Belgian neurological accreditation committees, societies of physicians for persons with intellectual disabilities (ABC1), pulmunologists, ENT-physicians, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, clinical neuropsychologists and nurse practitioners (MANP) has been requested.

In order to stimulate scientific research on epilepsy and sleep and wake disorders, the Scientific Committee at Kempenhaeghe invited young researchers to present their research projects. Authors from various countries submitted abstracts. The committee accepted seventeen abstracts to be presented at the 14th annual international clinical symposium ‘Update@kempenhaeghe.nl’ in Heeze.
The winner of the poster presentation 2012 is Bregt van Nieuwenhuyse (epilepy): ‘Hippocampal deep brain stimulation modifies disease progression in a TLE animal model’.
The winner of the incentive prize of the poster presentation 2012 is: Debby Schrans (neurocognition): 'Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Cognitive and Psychosocial functioning’.
Guided tour
The congres organisation provides the opportunity to visit some departments on the premises for a limited number of participants (max. 20 persons). The guided tour takes place on Friday during the lunch break. Signing up is possible in the morning at the service desk.
