Before your visit

Directly after receiving the referral letter, Kempenhaeghe will provide you with a first questionnaire. This questionnaire will be used to see which sleep expert may help you best. After this you will receive an invitation with the date and time you are expected. Do keep in mind that the waiting period may be 3 to 5 months.

Complete the sleep questionnaire and sleep/wake calendar
With the invitation you will receive a so-called ‘sleep questionnaire’ and a ‘sleep/wake calendar’. Please complete these and return them as soon as possible. The specialist is then able to form a picture of your sleep habits, sleep needs and sleep complaints. You may also choose to complete the sleep questionnaire and the sleep/wake calendar  through a special secure website. You then receive a log in code and further instructions.

Things to take with you
Please take along at your first visit:

  • your health insurance information
  • proof of your identity
  • maybe a video tape of your sleep behaviour (snoring, sleepwalking, etc)

Your medical information will be sent to Kempenhaeghe by your referring doctor.

Make a list of questions
To prevent you from forgetting to discuss certain subjects or to ask the doctor or psychologist questions it is advisable to make a list of subjects/questions in advance. Maybe you can prepare the list of questions in advance together with someone else, for instance your partner or family doctor.

We advise you to take someone you trust with you to the outpatient clinic. Two hear more than one. This other person also can listen carefully whether all the questions on your list have been dealt with. Possibly he/she may help describing the sleep problems and make notes during the conversation. Do not hesitate to ask for extra information if there is something you do not understand or ask for brochures so you will be able to read the information again.

During your visit

Your talk with the doctor
For a first meeting with the specialist, in principle, half an hour has been planned; for the psychologist one hour.
You will have ample time to explain your complaints and experiences. Follow-up talks will also have plenty of time for you. Those are used to discuss the results of examinations and tests and your treatment, but there is also time to discuss any additional problems.

Diagnosing the problem and its cause
After your first visit to a doctor or other care worker you will probably have to undergo one or more examinations and tests to diagnose your problem and its cause as well as possible. The doctor or other care worker will explain what diagnostic examinations and tests will be best for you. (Information is available on this website as well: Diagnostics). You will be fully informed about the nature, duration, time and place of the examination.

Generally, it takes a few weeks to analyse the results of your tests and examinations. This means that you will have to come back to your doctor or other care worker to discuss these at a later moment.

After your visit

When the diagnosis is clear the specialist will present a proposal for treatment. In consultation with you Kempenhaeghe will inform the referring doctor. In principle, the referring doctor will do the treatment.

For some patients Kempenhaeghe will start the treatment and counselling. Your regular doctor and/or care worker will take over again once examinations, the treatment and/or support by Kempenhaeghe's centre for sleep medicine have been completed. Kempenhaeghe guides this "back referral" with the utmost care in consultation with you.
